THE BACHELORS WERE HERE

Wow... we had the Bachelors in the studio for a chat about their work and the new CD that hits the shops on Monday.
Brothers Dec & Con Cluskey make up the BACHELORS, these guys had 18 hit records in the UK charts throughout the 60's and sold millions of records around the world.
In 1964, the Bachelors had more records in the top ten than the Beatles. They were in the charts for an amazing 77 weeks compared to the Beatles with 50 weeks....

Hi Con

We met a few years ago at a Golf Celeb do at the Oliva Nova Hotel in the Costa Blanca. Hope you are well, I am in the food business.

I was just reading the local paper and see that you are going to perform in Spain, the website just says Mar Menor and Parador (a chain of hotels). Do you have any more details as to the venues as I would like to bring my wife (Australian) to see you guys perform

As a matter of interest she did not have a great image of the Bachelors but I believe I know why. I was reading your statements re. John Stokes (what a stressful time that must have been) and note that he has been performing in Oz over the years as the Bachelors and, of course, is nothing like the Cluskeys original sound. I want her to see the real thing, I bought a CD recently to illustrate my point, she said it was a different group entirely.

Take care and hope your health is holding up, as we get older that is the most important thing,

I see frost outside this morning, we live in Javea, I thought global warming was coming not global cooling.

Take care Con

David Franks

Dear Con and Dec,

How I so wish I`d done my homework before booking to see who we thought were going to be yourselves last night in Blackpool. As a birthday surprise for my mum I booked us a night in a hotel (we drove up from Leicestershire during the day) and were so excited at the prospect of seeing you both again. I`d even managed to get second row seats (now I know why!!) and when we realised we`d been duped we were in tears. At the interval we decided not to sit through anymore of the poor imitation of our idols and left the theatre with quite a few other clearly upset fans.
We met you many years ago in our home town of Loughborough at the Town hall where you kindly spent time with us after a fantastic performance.
Please let me know if you have any performance dates planned in the UK, mum is now in her seventies and I`d love for her to see you just one more time.

God bless you and your families,

Ms Tina Cooper and mum Janet.

Hi to you both!  I am a forty-something lawyer living in Oxford and the other day on a Radio 2 quiz I heard ‘The Bachelors’ being mentioned.  It immediately took me back to my childhood when I was completely mad about your Group.  So I have now dug out my old LPs, purchased some new CDs and bought myself a ‘record player’ (how I’ve missed having one of these!) and am once again enjoying your music.  I have also now introduced your sound to my four children!

I was a huge fan as a youngster, owning many of your World of… and Best of…LPs which I listened to constantly, poring over the album covers (as you do when you’re young).  I even used to dream about meeting you one day and being asked to join your Group!  And then one day when I was about 16, I was walking with my family in Brighton (I think it was) and suddenly I realized that the guys walking towards me were you both!  It brought all those memories flooding back but I’m sad to say I never said a word as you passed (being too British!).

Well, I am writing now just to thank you for all the great music you brought into my life, particularly as a child. I have very fond memories of sitting on my Grandma’s knee and singing ‘Cecilia’ to her (her favourite as she was called Cicely) and your versions of ‘Well Respected Man’ and ‘Elusive Butterfly’ have always been absolute favourites of mine. In fact, because I heard your versions of many songs you have done before hearing other artists’ versions, your versions will always to me be the versions.

So there you are! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I wish you all the very best and hope one day to catch you live.

All best wishes

Hugh Tebay

Well my name is Jen, and I have been a fan of the Bachelors since I was a very small girl. I remember seeing you all at a charity  Molten bike ride thing in Great Yarmouth area many years ago and crying because I managed to get the autograph of the love of my life, Con..so I hope this is truly you here on this email.I am honoured.
All through my teenage years and my marriage and the upbringing of my 7 children, you remained my true heart throb. I left England in 91 to live in Australia but am back home now in London. I went to see The Bachelors in Australia and was most disappointed to see only John Stokes + 2 and not you. I dragged my youngest daughter with me and she now at 19 is happy to listen and sing along to your songs. She thinks I am a tragically nutty Mum, but I love you still.
I just bought a copy of the new cd and love it..I have a cd in Aus and had started to irritate my young grandchildren with it before I left.
Well Done and I hope one day to see you sing.

Hi there,

I have just bought the CD, the very best of the bachelors.  I have enjoyed listening to it and remembering where I first saw them.  Not sure of the year but must have been about 47 years ago.  The venue was the Webster Memorial Hall in Arbroath, Scotland and it was a summer show.  They were called 'The Three Harmonicords' at that time.  The rest of bill was great also.  Patrick O'Hagan, Jackie Fearn, Elaine and Derek, Hal Roach, Steve Perry and John Mulvaney.  I remember saying to my husband these lads, the Harmonicords, will go far.

Thank you for the music lads

I have just been over to my local Tesco to get your album for an American member who hasn't got a credit card and therefore cannot buy it from Amazon. They have SOLD OUT!!! I thought you may be pleased to hear that. Not only sold out but the ONLY album that has been sold out!

Now Kevin will have to look at the other Tesco in the area where he works to see if he can get it. If not, the  I have to ask Mum to look in ASDA for it  or for my sister to get it from Woolworths where she works.

Hi, Con!

Lovely to hear from you!!! How are you fellas doing since the lovely chat we had on 21/7/2008 for BBC Radio Manchester?

The interview is being broadcast in 4 parts (part one immediately after we spoke last Monday) with lots of tracks from your latest album. Why? A lot of brilliant stuff too good for one night only...we're still giggling over Danger Man...

Whilst having a good look round your website, I read about Ireland's contribution to the music world. Bet you know that the Irish passport is the only one in the world with a musical instrument as its SOLE emblem - is it any wonder, after reading your web page??

It was felt that Daniel's achievements needed a mention - after all, he released an album called 'I Believe' a few years ago with a cover of your timeless hit... and those ladies will be chuffed, too!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Number 7 in the charts. Well done, guys!! Well done!!!

Thanks for the signed copy of the album, which Universal kindly sent on your behalf - it's what one calls a practical treasure...to be played frequently and to be cherished dearly.

Thank you for being a major part of the soundtrack of my life.

Keep it going!!!

All the best!
Josephine

This is a great day. I walked into Woolworths on Talbot road around 9.15am to find their shelves loaded with the new album which was sat in the number 9 slot on their chart section.

Amazon have you at number 16 in their 'overall music sales' and you have two CD's in their top 20 'easy listening' chart - the new album being at No.2.

Your two TV slots have been great and I loved the TV AD for the new album too. This massive interest in The Bachelors is long overdue, but I always knew it would come!

I am as thrilled about all of this as you guys are - so exciting.

Congratulations and WELL DONE !

John

Hello Con & Dec

Have enjoyed your music for many years and glad to see this great website dedicated to The Bachelors.  I remember you being on a show which I think was in the 70's, not sure if it was seaside special or something similar, it might even have been early 80's, the memory not so sharp these days, but what I do remember is the song you sung which was 'Even Now' I think Barry Manilow had a version.  But the version you sang that night sticks in my mind being done in that magical Bachelors style.  For years I tried to find this on record but have always been unsuccsessful.  Is it available on any of your cd collections as would love to purchase it.

Looking forward to the new hits collection too and enjoyed your interview on BBC Breakfast News a few weeks ago and loved the old clips, pure magic.

Well good luck for many more years lads, the music industry is blessed with such an amazing and enduring group.

Kindest regards

Bonjour Con & Dec:

I just finally decided to take a look and see if I could find something about the Bachelors on the web.

You have no idea what kind of magic you created with your amazing voices and personalities.

I saw you perform in Wigan ( Lancashire ) in 1968. This was the best show I have ever seen to this very day.

I currently work In Canada and occasionally visit the UK . I hope to have the chance to see and hear you again.

You are simply sensational! God bless you!

Thank you

Hi Dec,

I have now played the Album 6 times on 3 different players and have not changed my opinion one bit. I think you have a blinder there and it should be pushed at it's utmost. 'She Moved Through The Fair' would make a single that your fans and the modern generation just wouldn't believe. The whole album is a classic, could even become a cult album in time. Wow! is the word I first spoke after my first listen and I said it again and again. And I'll say this once more too, any DJ who can't find at least one track to play on his/her show, knows little or nothing about music. Superb!

Cheers

Hi Dec,

Just to let you know that 'Irish Songs the way we sing 'em' has finally arrived this morning and boy did it arrive? I must tell you that it is the best album that I have purchased for some considerable time and I buy a few. I had to play it twice over and 'Greenfields of France' had me balling my eyes out as I remembered my Great Uncle John, who died fighting in 1917 and my Grandfather, a POW for over three years, it is a really devastating track. 'Maggie', sung by many people but never better than this. The poignant 'The Fields Of Athenry' a beautiful reminder of times gone by. 'She Moved Through The Fair', great and I could go on. The whole Album is a watershed not only to The Bachelors' but music in general, it is possibly as significant to 'The Bachelors' as Sergeant Pepper was to The Beatles. Absolutely brilliant and any DJ in the land who can't find at least one track to play from it, doesn't know much about music.

Thanks and Cheers

John M. Scott

PS. I waited until my emotions had subsided before writing the above.

Hi,

Your site is fab and so personal. My wee sister Diane was named after your single.

When I was 4 in 1964 she was born in the house. My auntie and Granny came to the house to see the new arrival and I ran to greet them shouting "I've a new baby sister and her names Diane" I loved your record so much.My Mum and Dad looked at each other as that wasnt what they had picked! But both smiled and said it was perfect.
She is so proud of that story and for her 40th birthday I framed an original 45 single which has pride of place on her living room wall.

Would it be possible to send an autograph for her?

How can three men called John, Jonathon and Kevin, be performing at the Friends Restaurant, Hyatt Hotel Perth and calling themselves The Bachelors, on their world tour singing all their hits and it does not mention they are not the original Bachelors?
I must admit on the TV ads they sound like you but certainly do not look like you, I feel this is most unfair to you and the paying public, who will spend money to go and see them believing they are the true Bachelors.
I do hope you can do something about this and get it stopped.

just a short e-mail to say thank you for a terrific night of entertainment you and your fellow band members, plus your lighting and sound men gave us recently.  what true professionals you are, it could not have been easy for you on such a small stage. The feed back from our members was one of overwhelming praise about the bachelors with a lot saying can we get you back at some stage.

once again thank you.

Hi Dec and Con,

I am just writing to tell you what wonderful singers I think you both are!!  I love all your songs but my absolute favourite song is Ramona.  I was just wondering, which one of you sang the lead in that song.  It really is fabulous!!

My Mom is from Ballymena, Northern Ireland and I have grown up listening to Irish music all my life.  I have always loved music from the 50's and 60's, and I just love your way of singing.  I have 2 children who also enjoy listening to the same kind of music.  They like your songs, too!!

I think you are such handsome and versatile singers and musicians!!

I wonder if you would not mind filling a small request.  I would be very grateful if you could please send me a photograph, signed by both of you!!  It would mean so much to me!!

I wish you continued success in your award-winning, multifaceted careers!!
If you ever perform in Ontario, Canada, I would love to come and see you in concert!!

We had the pleasure to see them on Saturday, April 28, at Hauppauge High School on Long Island in New York.

It was part of LAR Enterprise’s two day show.

And we can say it was a pleasure, we only wish they had more time to sing.

They were one of the reasons we traveled over 5 hours from our home in Maryland, and BOY was it worth the trip.

Please tell them how much we appreciated the opportunity to hear them sing. They were wonderful.

Should you want to respond to my e-mail, please e-mail my wife at aimeesnan@aol.com

She was as impressed as any of us.

Thanks,

Bob Powell

Just thought I would send you a message to say thanks for a great night in Batley on the 40th Anniversary of the Batley Variety Club, I'm going to be honest and say that I  had'nt really heard much of your music  in all my 37 years  but I am beginning to realise that the music of the 60's and 70's  is in a world of its own in terms of quality and lastability . My mum worked there as a waitress in  68/69 and she thought you were great as it brought back a lot of memories for her. Hope you come back soon for another gig at the great Batley Variety Club.
One last question,  how much did you get paid back in 67' if thats not too much to ask?
 Thanks

Simon

Dear Lynne,

My wife an I went to Warners holiday resort ( Lakeside) in June and were surprised and extremely pleased to discover that the Bachelors were performing.
Unfortunately we both assumed that it would be a substitue group, because having fondly remembered them from the 1960s, we did not believe it could possibly be the original Con and Dec forty odd years later.
For unavoidables reasons, we arrived late for the performance and could only find a seat behind a pillar where we heard very well but had poor sight of them.
We have been kicking ourselves ever since as it was the best show by far that we have ever seen at Warners resorts or anywhere else for that matter.
We were particularly impressed with the lady singer as well of course, Dec and Con.
They seem to be better than they were in the 1960s and we were amazed at how well they looked and the amount of effort and energy they were capable of putting into their shows forty years further on. (much more than I coud do I might add.)
Many warm congrayulations to them and may they be able to carry on giving joy to people for many years to come.
We live in Dunstable Bedfordshire and as a result of this pleasant experience, we would both very much like to see another performance in the UK or possibly on a cruise (if I can save up enough).  I have looked on your website but I cannot find any information on future perfomance dates. Is it possible to let me know if and where they are going to appear anywhere within the next few months?

Kind regards,

Neil Conacher.

Dear Con,

On Friday the 10th of November,i went to see your show at the Pavilions in Exmouth.
I did not wait as the other people did to introduce myself, as basically i felt that you would have had enough of fans and signing and performing to be bothered with any more of it!!!!!Basically all you would have wanted to do would have been to get the hell out of there and sit down and have a good drink. How you do it i will never know.
Talking to a friend today has spurred me into action to say what i was going to say,as she said how nice it would have been for him to know that there was at least ONE non beige person there who thought he was great.
When i was about 17 and living in the sticks in Yorkshire, there was only one chap on the television who ever drew my attention ,as i am after all a person of great discernment and distinction!!!!!
And it was YOU---known to all the family as ( THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE).
You could actually have been singing any kind of rubbish-----I didn't care------It was that smile that did it---and guess what --youv'e still got it lovey!!And so at your great age ,and me at mine -nearly 60.
It's always nice to know that you have still got what it takes to turn the head.
You didnt notice me,as you were too busy- head down earning an honest crust.Dec looked over twice--wondering who that woman was ,lurking in the wings looking half reasonable as if she'd made the effort to dress up for a night out!!I was the one not wearing trainers. It was that easy to tell.
So--Keep it up and well done.
Your smile lives on--appreciation society member.
Jane Bretherton.

Dec, just a short note to thank you for the great show you put on for us last night.

We hope we looked after you well, and that you enjoyed your short spell in Cornwall.

For a small village like ours, this was a major outlay for us, considering we had to work with a full capacity of around 120 people, but we were delighted to come out with a profit.
Everyone enjoyed the show, and thought that you were all brilliant - if you are planning a short tour of the area next year, let us know, and we might be able to work in another date.

Thanks once again,

When I arrived in Blackpool on Monday the 20th September, I went to book what shows were on, as I usually do. I was very surprised and delighted to discover that Con and Dec were on at The Opera House. I went to The Bachelors Show on Wednesday 23rd September. It was a few years since I had seen Con and Dec on stage. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. They are still as good as they ever were, and the show brought back so many happy memories to me of seeing them in the 1960’s and 70’s at The Opera House and at various other theatres in Blackpool.

After the show I told Con and Dec that I had seen them for the first time 40 years ago at the Central Pier at Blackpool when they did their first summer season and strangely enough, I was sitting on the front row then in July 1964. So it was a night of memories.

Thanks once again and I look forward to another year of news from Con and Dec.

Yours Sincerely

Margaret Davey.

Anyway, I would love to share my special night back in Blackpool at the famous Opera House, the first place where I actually saw the boys top the bill in my teens. My dear friend May came along with me and we stayed over for the night.

The new act was nicely mixed with old and new songs and of course having Dec’s daughter singing and playing keyboard at one side, and the happy smiling dancing lovely bearded John Dartnell on the other side made the sound buzz. Also a great new drummer to me, completed the excellent performance.

We had a fantastic night. Con and Dec made me feel so welcome. So a big thank you for a perfect night, Con and Dec. Also another Thank you to John Dartnell who sat along side us to have a great conversation which ended a perfect night.

Cheers.

Hi Dec,

Just to let you know that Sylvia and myself had a really fantastic time at the meeting/dinner.  Finally meeting Con, he is truely a really great guy, as I'm sure you are aware.  What can I say about your show!  This was the first time that I had seen both of you perform live, brilliant!.  Sylvia was a bit embarrased when you came and sat next to her and sang (she loved it really).  Con's rendition of "everybody hurts" was absolutely stupendous, so much feeling at the way it was put across.

Having been reading your "one minute gang" comments about how to present yourself on stage etc, it was all there in your show in the way you have advised people.  The right sound system/mics etc, lighting, costume, and of course stage presence.  You have both been at the game a long time and have learned much, hence your advice to newcomers.  If these newcomers were to come to one of your shows, they would learn a great deal in how the pro's do it.

Once again thank you for your time, and apologise if I keep on.

Give my best regards to your brother Con.

Very best regards,

Paul
Con ~ - fabulous fabulous show! The joint was really jumpin'.......people are still talking.

Very many thanks to everyone.

Warm wishes.
